Already for the 5th time, the Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen participates in the annual European Innovation Summit, initiated by Knowledge4Innovation. This year, the participants will be introduced to the newly developed ‘WE-Energy Game’ as part of the lunch debate with European politicians and members of parliament. The We-Energy game offers the opportunity to experience first-hand the challenges of accelerating the energy transition process. The game will be played together with 14 students of the Master in Sustainable Energy System Management (MSc) of the Hanze University of Applied Sciences and is an unique opportunity to bring in their innovative expertise.
The WE-Energy Game has been developed as part of the doctoral research of Frank Pierie. The game provides insight into the possibilities and difficulties of energy transition for key stakeholders in local sustainable energy (e.g. Energy co-operatives). While playing the game, the participants negotiate from different perspectives (people, planet, permit, profit, balance) on the use of renewable energy sources in order to make a town or city energy neutral. The goal of the game is to shape the participants to become aware and more sensitive regarding the importance of sustainable energy and working together.
The game will be led by Jan-jaap Aué, Dean of Centre of Expertise Energy and Frank Pierie, PhD researcher at Hanze University of Applied Sciences. In addition, Wim van Gemert, Leading lecturer Energy Transition, and Rob Verhofstad, member executive board of Hanze UAS, share their vision on the topic.
The master students can be considered as talented representatives of the global context. who decided to continue their study in the EU with a good reason. They decided not to wait for an energy change, but start the change right now. Within this context, ‘People in Power’ is the new expression. This, more than ever, holds for the transition to a sustainable energy society in the EU and beyond. For them the EU is the best place on earth to develop their talents and to pursue their dreams.
The 8th European Innovation Summit comes at a time of major challenges and opportunities requiring bold decisions. Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things; innovative business models for the sharing economy; disruptive technologies such as autonomous driving or genetic engineering – are some of the big game changers that have a profound impact on the way we live and work.
Innovation as the response to major societal challenges is not only about technological developments executed by researchers in their labs. It requires the involvement of the users from the beginning and equally important a better connection and communication between science and society.
