Given all the radioactive elements inside a nuclear power plant, it shouldn't come as a surprise that there's a little more to a plant's exterior than you'd find at a coal power plant. When it comes to curbing the greenhouse effect, nuclear energy appears to be a useful technology. But nuclear energy is well-known for its power to divide opinions.
Proponents consider nuclear energy to be safe, sustainable and necessary to combat climate change. Opponents consider the technology unnecessary and fundamentally unsafe: because of the radioactive waste and the risk of serious accidents, such as in Fukushima after the earthquake in Japan.
